Background:This study was conducted at a national equestrian clinic and has been the subject of several studies. The aim was to determine the efficacy of doxycycline (Doxy) versus tetracycline (TET) for the treatment of chronic disease of horses, with and without spirochetes, associated with inflammatory and immune system disorders. The study was conducted at the Veterinary Clinic of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the Veterinary College of the University of Parma, Italy.
Methods:This study was a single-center, randomized, parallel-group, double-blinded clinical trial in 42 horses with chronic disease of horses that included spirochetes associated with inflammatory and immune system disorders, with and without spirochetes associated with inflammatory and immune system disorders. The study protocol was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Veterinary Clinic of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Parma, Italy, and the study was conducted in accordance with the Rome decree of the Italian College of Veterinary Medicine. The study inclusion criteria were chronic disease of horses with chronic disease of horses with inflammatory and immune system disorders, with and without spirochetes, associated with inflammatory and immune system disorders, and not known to be related to spirochetes. The exclusion criteria were the use of antimicrobials to treat chronic disease of horses with inflammatory and immune system disorders, and the use of spirochetes to treat chronic disease of horses with inflammatory and immune system disorders.
Results:Of the 42 horses that were included, 27 were administered doxycycline and two were administered tetracycline. The duration of treatment ranged from 3 weeks to 36 weeks (median 36 weeks). The mean duration of treatment was 3.8 weeks (range 2 to 5 weeks). The percentage of horses treated with Doxy and tetracycline was significantly different from those administered Doxy and TET. The most commonly used medications for treatment were: tetracycline (33%), doxycycline (20%), doxycycline plus tetracycline (17%), doxycycline plus tetracycline (12%), tetracycline plus doxycycline (11%) and tetracycline plus doxycycline (7%). There were no significant differences in the duration of treatment between the groups.
Conclusion:Doxycycline and tetracycline were effective and well tolerated in the treatment of chronic disease of horses with inflammatory and immune system disorders.
Malaria:Malaria is a serious tropical disease, common in developing countries. In the Middle East it is often contracted from travellers who are bitten by small animals, often on the face or neck. The disease is highly contagious and is spread by mosquitoes. If bitten, theiasis esquiros secundarios (infection of a skin and soft tissue that may become inflamed), usually in the mouth or throat. This is a serious disease, and treatment is required.
The disease causes fever and chills, usually within two to six days. The bite causes mild irritation, and there are no visible symptoms. If not treated, it can cause permanent blindness, loss of hearing, and other problems.
Symptoms of malaria include:
Treatment usually involves daily injections of doxycycline, which can be taken at any time of the day.
Malaria prophylaxis:Malaria prophylaxis is the most important risk factor for malaria. If a person has a blood test for the malaria parasite P. falciparum, they should not travel to Malaysia, nor to any other country for malaria prophylaxis.
Who is at risk? The adult population of children is estimated to be between 8 and 10 years, and adults are likely to be bitten by a dog or cat. The adult population of women is estimated to be around 4 to 6 years. People above the age of 35 are most likely to contract malaria.
What are the risk factors for malaria? There are a number of risk factors for malaria that are not listed here. Talk to your GP or a travel health expert if you have any further questions.
